Magnum Research BFR .45-70

It's the Ultimate Hand Cannon!
Gun Buyer's Annual 2003

By Hal Swiggett
Maybe Jim Skildum knew that I have been, for ever-so-many years, a .45-70 fanatic. Maybe he knew I had one single-action revolver and two single-shot pistols chambered for the .45-70. Maybe he knew I had hunted many, many years with the .45-70 "cattige," as one old-timer called it who went to wherever fine gunsmiths go when their time has run out here on earth. Whatever, one was delivered to me here in San Antonio a few days ago.

My office postal scale told me this .45-70 Magnum Research sin-gle-action, five shot revolver weighed 4.75 pounds. My RCBS trigger pull scale told me, after checking it several times and getting the same reading, it fired clean as breaking glass, at 4.25 pounds. By the way, its barrel length is right at 10 inches.

I was able to find five boxes of .45-70 ammunition on my shelves, here in my office, so I took my Oehler Model 35P chronograph to Ralph Voss's "A Place to Shoot" range. My first screen of Oehler's Model 35P is always set at ten feet and yes, there are three "screens" (actually triangular "devices") to accurately check the vel-ocity of each bullet fired on the way to its target.

And yes!

Those five boxes were three Winches-ter (but all different loads) and one each of Remington and Cor-Bon.

Our Texas Deer Hunting Season is two and a half months away. Why am I feeling bad?

I would have liked to take this one deer hunting, but with a scope on top, and I promised Jim Skildum at Magnum Research that I would get it back to him in two, or at the most three, days. Unfortunately, our Texas deer season is many, many weeks away! So be it!
